Sponsor a Child!

On June 25th, 2003 I started sponsoring Liji, an eight-year old little girl from India, through Compassion International. That was exactly nine years ago today.

Now? Liji is seventeen, attending school and wants to be a doctor. I had a part in that.

What a humbling, incredible privilege.

Isn’t she lovely?!

I picked Liji because I did (and do) want to spend my life serving the people of India. Since I couldn’t go at sixteen (with parental permission anyway ;) ) I did the next best thing, I helped provide for a child in need.

A few weeks ago, my husband and I also signed up to sponsor ten-year old, Naveen. This precious boy had been waiting almost a year for a sponsor (how long must that feel to a child?) and has a birthday coming up in a few weeks.

I think he has a few more reasons to celebrate now!

Handsome little man.

Sponsoring a child through Compassion is so simple and, quite honestly, so affordable. It’s $38.00 a month with a little extra for birthday and christmas gifts (the “extra” is optional – but, come on, who doesn’t want a birthday present? ;) ).

To sponsor a child:

1) Go to the website: www.compassion.com

2) Click on the Sponsor a Child tab.

( OR pick a cause close to your heart. Compassion works with needy children, cares for mothers and babies, assists with a variety of urgent needs and helps develop national leaders. They could all use support).

3) Choose your child and complete the registration information.

Once you’re registered you can set up an automatic withdrawal from your sponsor account (then all you have to remember to do is write! :) ), send letters online (Compassion has wonderful templates that you can personalize with pictures) and find out more information about your child (like their favorite activities, family background and fun details about their country).

4) Pray.

Pray for your child to know God, to do well in school, to build new friendships and to grow into a person who make a difference in their corner of the world.

Sponsoring a child gives them choices in life.

$38.00 a month cares for a child’s basic needs and provides the opportunity for them to rise above their circumstances through education, medical care and Bible training.

If a child has to worry about whether they’ll have food and water - they will struggle to dream about the future.

Sponsoring a child takes care of today so they can dream about tomorrow.

A child with hope and excitement about the future is beautiful to see. Sponsorship helps provide that

Sponsorship tells a child they’re worth something, that they are special, that they can do it.

I believe in child sponsorship. I’ve seen it change lives (including mine). It excites me and deeply humbles me to think about the way God has allowed my husband & I to impact these two precious lives.

Thanks for reading this.

Also, I do know that sometimes even $38.00 can be difficult to commit too (when I was in college my parents assisted me in sponsoring Liji). If finances are that tight please don’t feel guilty – pray for these precious children and the adults they’ll grow into.

That prayer support is worth its weight in gold.

Do what you can at the stage of life you’re at. Then, when money is more abundant (hey, we can dream right? ;) ) maybe you’ll re-consider it?

Leave some love? :)
